THE THORIUM-ALUMINIUM SYSTEM

Journal Article · · J. Inst. Metals
OSTI ID:4247072
The thorium-aluminum system has been investigated over the whole range of composition by thermal, x-ray, and metallographic methods. Six intermetallic compounds occur: Th/sub 2/Al, Th/sub 3/Al/sub 2/, and ThAl/sub 2/ are formed directly from the liquid, while ThAl, ThAl/sub 3/, and a compound of approximate composition Th/sub 3/Al/sub 2/Al/sub 2/ are formed by peritectic reactions. Th/ sub 3/Al/sub 2/ and ''Th/sub 2/Al/sub 3/'' decompose eutectoidally at 1075 and 1100 deg C, respectively, whereas Th/sub 2/Al, ThAl, ThAl/sub 2/, and ThAl/sub 3/ are stable at room temperature. Aluminum is slightly soluble in thorium, the limits at 1300 and 1000 deg C being 0.85 and 0.4 at.%, respectively. Alloys of all compositions were stable in air at room temperature, provided that care was taken to prevent contamination by air or carbon vapor during melting or heat treatment. (auth)
