ALLOYS OF THORIUM WITH CERTAIN TRANSITION METALS. III. THE SYSTEM THORIUM- PALLADIUM

Journal Article · · J. Less-Common Metals
The thorium--palladium binary system was studied over the whole range of compositions in the temperature range At 1000 deg C the limit of solid solubility of thorium in palladium is between 15 and 17% and at this temperature seven intermetallic compounds are stable. Th/sub 2/Pd and ThPd crystallize directly from the melt at 1162 plus or minus 12 and 1412 plus or minus 12 deg C, respectively, while ThPd/sub 3/ melts above 1500 deg C; Th/sub 3/Pd/sub 4/ and Th/ sub 3/Pd/sub 5/ are formed peritectically at 1325 plus or minus 12 and 1387 plus or minus 12 deg C, respectively. Phase relationships in alloys of 7985% palladium were not established but two intermetallic compounds ThPd/sub 4/ and ThPd/sub x/ occur in this composition range. There is a sharp minimum in the solidus and liquidus of the palladium solid solution at approximately 12% thorium and 1125 plus or minus 12 deg C. (auth)
