THE YTTRIUM-MANGANESE SYSTEM

Journal Article · · Trans. Met. Soc. AIME
OSTI ID:4802482

BS>The yttrium- manganese system was investigated by thermal, metallographic, and x-ray diffraction methods. There are three intermetallic compounds present: YMn/sub 2/ which melts congruently, YMn/sub 4/ which undergoes syntectic decomposition, and YMn/sub 12/ which undergoes peritectic decomposition. The compound YMn/sub 4/ is ferromagnetic at room temperature with a Curie temperature of 214 deg C. There are eutecties at 25.2, 60.9, and 82.0 wt% Mn in which melt at 878, 1100, and 1075 deg C, respectively. Crystallographic data are given for YMn/sub 4/ and YMn/sub 12/. The terminal solid solubilities are low. (auth)
