MEASUREMENT WITH A CRYSTAL SPECTROMETER OF SOME SOFT GAMMA LINES IN THE NEUTRON CAPTURE IN EUROPIUM (in German)

The fission neutron spectra and average number of neutrons nu -bar emitted in the fission of U/sup 235/ and U/sup 238/ induced by 14.3 Mev neutrons were measured. The measurements were performed at energies between 0.4 and 5 Mev by the time of flight technique in which a pulsed neutron source was used. The spectra obtained are interpreted as consisting of the distribution of neutrons emitted by the fragments and the distribution of neutrons evaporated prior to fission of the nucleus. The following distribution parameters were determined: T/sub f/ = (1.06 plus or minus 0.03) Mev, T = (0.37 plus or minus 0.04) Mev and fraction of evaporated neutrons alpha = (16 plus or minus 2)% for U/sup 235/ and T/sub f/ = (1.16 plus or minus 0.03) Mev, T = (0.4 plus or minus 0.04) Mev, alpha = (21 plus or minus 2)% for U/sup 238/. The measured values of nu were 4.17 plus or minus 0.30 for U/sup 235/ and 4.28 plus or minus 0.30 for U/sup 238/, their ratio being nu -bar(U/sup 238/)/ nu (U/sup 235/) = 1.03 plus or minus 0.03.
