MEASUREMENT OF $mu$ IN FAST NEUTRON FISSION OF Th$sup 232$ AND U$sup 23$$sup 8$

Using a large liquid scintillator as the fission neutron detector the number of prompt neutrons per fission, nu , for Th/sup 232/ and U/sup 238/ are measured at neutron energies of 3.6 and 14.9 Mev. Values for U/sup 238/ of 2.79 plus or minus 0.09 and 4.75 plus or minus 0.12 and for Th/sup 232/ of 2.42 plus or minus 0.10 and 4.43 plus or minus 0.13 are found at the lower and higher energies, respectively. The parameters of the equation nu -bar(E/sub n/) = nu -bar(0) + alpha x E/sub n/, where E/sub n/ is the neutron energy in Mev, are obtained by fitting a straight line to the data using the least mean square method, yielding nu -bar(E/sub n/)= for U/sup 238/.
