S>The mean number of prompt neutrons nu -bar emitted per U/sup 238/ and Th/sup 232/ photofission by gamma rays from the F/sup 19/( p, alpha gamma q)O/ sup 16/ reaction produced in CaF/sub 2/ bombardment by 2.6 Mev protons was measured. The gamma spectrum has three lines of approximately 12 Mev from Fi/ sup 19/(p, gamma )Ne/sup 20/ was less than 0.2%. The mean gamma energy in U/ sup 238/ and Th/sup 232/ fissions was approximately 6.7 Mev. Measurements were made with a Van de Graaff electrostatic generator. The number of neutrons in U/sup 238/ and Th/sup 232/ fission was correlated with the corresponding number for spontaneous fission of Pu/sup 240/, determined with an order of accuracy of 2% to be nu -bar/sub 0/ = 2.26 plus or minus 0.05. After experimental corrections the ratio nu / nu /sub 0/ for the uranium was 1.86 plus or minus 0.09 and for thorium 1.42 plus or minus 0.09. Using these values, the /sub u/= 4.2 plus or minus 0.2 and nu /sub Th/ = 3.2 plus or minus 0.2. The obtained data show that a larger fragment deformation is found in U/sup 238/ and Th/sup 232/ photofission than in neutron fission. (R.V.J.)
