SOME EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATIONS OF THE NUMBER OF PROMPT NEUTRONS FROM FISSION
The average number of neutrons per fission ( nu -bar) is measured for the spontaneous fission of Cf/sup 252/. A large liquid scintillation counter is then used to compare other nu -bar values with that of Cf/sup 252/. Some results obtained for prompt neutrons from spontaneous fission (SF) and neutron induced fission (NIF) are: U/sup 235/ NIF at 75 kev, nu -bar = 2.39 plus or minus 0.05; U/sup 235/ NIF at 2.5 Mev, 2.60 plus or minus 0.08; U/sup 235/ NIF at 14.2 Miev, 4.28 plus or minus 0.08; U/sup 238/ NIF at 14.2 Mev, 4.44 plus or minus 0.12; Pu/sup 240/ SF, 2.13 plus or minus 0.05; Cf/sup 252/SF, 3-69 plus or minus 0.07. The results are based on the assumption that the Pu/sup 240/ and Cf/sup 252/ fission neutron spectra are identical; the dependence of the results on these spectra is discussed. (auth)
