A Note on Induced Sterility in Mink

Journal Article · · Reproduction (Cambridge)
In an attempt to induce mutations in mink, 30 males (Royal Pastel or Standard type) were exposed to x rays. The testes of three groups of 10 males each were irradiated one, two, or three times with a dose of 500 r at each treatment. The irradiation caused a very high degree of sterility in all three groups, and when the males were bred to nonirradiated females, a clear dose effect was observed. After 1500 r, no spermatozoa were found in the vaginal secretions immediately after copulation. The dose effect could also be seen from the histological results. In the 1500-r group, histological examination revealed extreme degeneration of spermatogenic tissue; spermatogonia, primary and secondary spermatocytes, and spermatids disappeared. In the 1000-r group a similar picture was seen. After 500 r, the damage was less drastic, but a high degree of degeneration was induced. Spermatozoa were found in the lumen in some tubules, but the number of spermatids was extremely low. The induced sterility seen here was very similar to the sterility in homozygous Stewart mink. The similarity between the histological preparations from Stewart mink and males in the present report receiving 1000 and 1500 r was striking, but in the Stewart mink the libido is not affected at all. It is concluded that irradiation of the testicles of mink at a dose of 500 r will cause a low fertility that is close to sterility. (BBB)
