Title: Vector meson + baryon resonance production in $pi$$sup +$p interactions at 7.1 GeV/c

From a large-statistics $pi$$sup +$p experiment at 7.1 GeV/c, data are presented on the reactions $pi$$sup +$$Yields$rho$sup 0$$delta$$sup ++$(1238) and $pi$$sup +$p $Yields$$omega$$delta$$sup ++$(1238). Cross sections, differential cross sections, and vector-meson single-density-matrix elements are presented and a general comparison of the production properties of the two reactions is given. In addition to (rho,$omega$) $delta$$sup ++$(1238) production there is also strong evidence for production of a $pi$$sup +$p enhancement with mass approx.1880 MeV, GAMMAapprox.200 MeV, and Jgreater than or equal to7/2 produced in association with the rho and $omega$ resonances. Detailed properties of this structure are presented and its production mechanism is compared with that of the corresponding $delta$ (1238) reactions. This state is also observed in the reaction K$sup +$$p$$Yields$K*$sup 0$(890) $delta$$sup ++$(1880) at 12.0 GeV/c, for which data are also presented.
