Solutions of crystalline dog and horse hemoglobin were exposed to gamma -rays from a Co/sup 60/ source, at dosages of from 174 to 1630 x 10/sup 3/ r. Irradiation caused a small increase in the nonprotein nitrogen content of the protein solutions, including a rise in the nonprotein tyrosine content of this fraction. A number of low molecular weight peptides were detached from the protein molecules. The amino acid sequences of ten of these peptides were determined. None of them showed any specific biological activity. Chromatographic analysis of the hydrolyzates of irradiated proteins did not reveal any new adino acids or their derivatives. The electrophoretic mobility and the rate of peptic digestion of hemoglobin and serum albumin were not affected by the irradiation of these proteins. (auth)
