Techniques for studying hydrogen and helium isotopes in materials: ion backscattering and nuclear microanalysis

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4175329

The techniques of ion backscattering and nuclear microanalysis as tools for studying hydrogen and helium isotopes in solid materials are discussed and compared. The advantages, disadvantages and limitations of each of these techniques are explored. Experimental results obtained using the two techniques are analyzed to obtain information on concentration-versus-depth profiles for these light atoms in heavy atom substrates. Measurements of the elastic scattering cross section for the $sup 3$H(p,p)$sup 3$H interaction are also discussed. (auth)
