DEPOSITION OF IODINE-131 FROM THE NUCLEAR WEAPON TESTS IN THE PACIFIC DURING 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4157519
Iodine-131 is produced in nuclear weapon tests as a fission-product. This report contains the results of measurements of iodine-131 in rainwater and milk for the period between June and August 1962. Data on the deposition of iodine-131 on the ground are also included. The measurements represent the levels of iodine-131 in the environment after the Pacific Tests which started on April 25, 1982. Brief description of the chemical procedure used for the separation of iodine-131 from rainwater and milk, and the method of counting are also included in this report. The present work is only preliminary to the large scale measurements of iodine-131 in the environments whenever the situation demands and the emphasis was more on the perfection of chemical andd counting methods than on the collection of data.
