RADIOACTIVE FALLOUT: SHORT-LIVED FISSION PRODUCTS IN AIR AND RAIN, AUGUST 1962-APRIL 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4168055
Short-lived fission products from the nuclear test explosions of 1962 were studied for the period August 1962 to April 1963. Total beta, barium-140, iodine-131, and zirconium-95 activities were estimated in samples of atmospheric dust and rainwater. The concentration of barium-140 in surface air at Chilton (Berkshire) attained a maximum value of 3.1 pc/kg of air on 10th November 1962. The concentration of iodine-131 in air was on average about half that due to barium-140. Dry deposition velocities and washout factors for particulate matter by precipitation increased sharply during late December 1962 and early January 1963. (auth)
