RADIOACTIVE FALL-OUT: SHORT-LIVED FISSION PRODUCTS FROM THE RUSSIAN NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS OF 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4830367
Short-lived fission products from the Russian nuclear explosions of 1961 were studied during the period September 1961 to March 1962. Total beta, Ba/sup 140/, and I/sup 131/ activities were measured in samples of atmospheric dust, rain, and grass. The concentration of Ba/sup 140/ in surface air at Chiiton (Berks) reached a maximum value of 2.0 picocurie/ kilogram of air in mid-November 1961; the Ba activity contributed approximates 15% of the total activity up to this time; the I /sup 131/activity, as measured, was more variable but until December tended toward one-half of that due to Ba/sup 140/ . The dry deposition velocities increased to 1 cm/sec in October 1961. (auth)
