IODINE-131 DOSE TO HUMAN THYROIDS IN NEW YORK CITY FROM NUCLEAR TESTS IN 1962
The I/sup 131/ content was measured in 456 human thyroids dissected at autopsies of New York City residents with no known history of thyroid disease during the U. S. and U.S.S.R. nuclear weapons tests in 1962. Measurements were also made of 31 fetal thyroids including 5 cases in which the maternal thyroids were also available for postmortem study. In vivo measurements were made of I/ sup 131/ in 11 normal adults who consumed known amounts of fresh milk contaminated with I/sup 131/ from fallout. The average concentration of I/sup 131/ in milk distributed in New York City was determined to be 38 pC/l from May 1962 to Jan. 1963. The maximum concentration was 370 pC/l in Sept. A thyroid dose of 40 Mrad was calculated to be the maximum thyroid dose of I/sup 131/ as a result of the 1962 nuclear tests. The weights of adult thyroids were 17.7 plus or minus 6.4 g for males, 15.3 plus or minus 6.4 g for females, and 1.5 plus or minus 0.6 g for full term stillborn infants. It was estimated that a child who consumed one liter of milk per day received a thyroid dose of 140 Mrad of I/ sup 131/ from fallout. (C.H.)
