MANUFACTURE OF ZIRCONIUM OXIDE FROM ZIRCON

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4155077

A process is given for manufacturing phosphorus-free ZrO/sub 2/ from zircon ore. The process comprises calcining a mixture of the ore and Na/sub 2/CO/ sub 3/ or K/sub 2/CO/sub 3/, extracting the phosphorus from the alkali metal zirconyl silicate by NaOH or KOH, converting the zirconyl silicate into ZrOCl/sub 2/ by HCl treatment, and converting ZrOCl/sub 2/ into ZrO/sub 2/ by H/sub 2/SO/ sub 4/ precipitation and calcination of the precipitate. When ZrO/sub 2/ prepared in this way is used to make blue ceramic stains, the resulting color is a turquoise blue as compared with the mauvish shade obtained when phosphorus- contaminated ZrO/sub 2/ is used.
