IMPROVEMENTS IN THE MANUFACTURE OF ZIRCONIUM OXIDE

A process for manufacturing phosphorus-free zirconium oxide from zircon ore was described. The ore was converted to sodium or potassium zirconyl silicate by sintering with a stoichiometric quantity or a slight excess of sodium or potassium carbonate. The silicate was extracted with a solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide thereby removing phosphorus as soluble sodium or potassium phosphate. The silicate was converted to zirconyl chloride by hydrochloric acid and zirconyl chloride into zirconium oxide by treatment with sulfuric acid followed by calcination of the resulting precipitate.
