PROCESS FOR PRODUCING SODIUM ZIRCONATE FROM ZIRCONIUM-CONTAINING ORES

A process is given for producing at a high rate from zirconium ores sodium zirconate which contains only a small amount of sodium silscate. The process comprises fusing the ore with a NaOH solution, water-leaching the frit, decanting the supernatant liquid to remove the watersoluble compounds such as sodium silicate, and repeating the leaching and decanting steps. Additional NaOH is added to the sludge after each decanting and before dilution with more leach water, to prevent the sodium zirconate from suspending in the solution and thereby adding to the process difficulty.
