A process is outlined for recovering zirconium from zircons and other zirconium silicate ores. In the process, alkali metal hydroxide is added to the ore and the mixture is heated to initiate reaction, the reaction being conducted in the presence of alkali metal zirconate and under conditions such that the mixture does not melt. The proportion of the zirconate used should be l to 5 parts by weight per part by weight of the ore. The resulting frit is then treated with water to extract the SiO/sub 2/ and with acid to extract the zirconium. (D.L.C.)
