EFFECTS OF SUBLETHAL IRRADIATION ON PARABIOSIS INTOXICATION IN HOLTZMAN-CFN PARABIONTS

Parabiosis of Holtzman and Carworth Farms Nelson rats resulted in parabiosis intoxication in approximately 45% of pairs and death in approximately half of those with disease. In the majority of cases the anemia was found in the CFN partner. In the majority of surviving animals, dehiscence of the union was evident at 30 days after pairing, and lack of permanent union was indicated by lack of cross-circulation. Sublethal irradiation of either Holtzman or CFN partners accentuated and increased the incidence of anemia in the Holtzman rat at 3 days after pairing and irradiation of the CFN partner resulted in an increased incidence of late disease and a high mortality rate. The incidence of intoxication was decreased somewhat by irradiation of Holtzman partners. Irradiation of both Holtzman and CFN partners resulted in an incidence of intoxication which was not different from that in H-CFN controls. In all but one of surviving pairs, in which one or both partners received irradiation, permanency of union was shown by the existence of cross-circulation at 30 and 60 days after joining. (auth)
