Parabiosis permits rats to survive lethal x-irradiation. This protection is due in part to maintenance of blood cell counts within nearly normal levels. The approximately normal blood cell counts and hematocrit levels are maintained at first by transfer of circulating cells, later by repopulation of the marrow. (auth)
