SAFETY DEVICE FOR NEUTRONIC REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4149194
A safety device using a neutron-absorbent gas, e.g., BF/sub 3/, is designed for gas-cooled reactors. The BF/sub 3/ vessel of the safety device is located in the coolandt outlet and has at least one pipe opening into the coolant inlet. The mouth of the pipe has a closure member which opens when a predetermined gas pressure in the vessel is exceeded. In the event of excessive heat generation in the reactor, the coolant temperature at the outlet rises, increasing the pressure in the BF/sub 3/ vessel and thus causing the BF/sub 3/ to escape into the let to stop the reaction in a very short time.
