Effects of therapeutically applied whole-body x irradiation were studied on nucleotides and other components of human erythrocytes. Diphosphopyridine nucleotide and triphosphopyridine nucleotide were significantly elevated in the 1- to 4-day period after irradiation. Uric acid was significantly increased 24 hr postirradiation. The possible significance of these results in relation to known effects of radiation is discussed. Erythrocyte glycolysis was studied in human subjects, dogs, and rabbits after whole-body x irradiation. Statistical evaluation of these results indicates that irradiation does not affect erythrocyte glycolysis in any consistent manner. (auth)
