INFLUENCE OF TOTAL-BODY X-IRRADIATION ON NUCLEOSIDE PHOSPHORYLASE IN RAT ERYTHROCYTES

Single-dose whole-body irradiation of rats with 100 to 1000 r inhibited erythrocyte nucleoside phosphorylase from 28 to 77% at 96 hours postirradiation. Subsequently, complete recovery of enzyme activity was observed in erythrocytes from rats exposed to 100, 250, and 500 r of x rays, partial recovery of activity after 750 r, and no recovery after 1000 r. Erythrocytes from young rats contained a higher activity of nucleoside phosphorylase, but the inhibition of enzyme activity after whole-body x irradiation was the same as in the older rat erythrocytes when compared on a per cent basis.
