EFFECTS OF ROENTGEN RAYS ON ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK IN GUINEA PIGS (in Hungarian)

Experiments were conducted on 200- to 500-g male guinea pigs, one group of which received 200-r, wholebody, 180-kv x irradiation at 14.3 r/min and were sensitized with 5 mg crystaline ovalbumin seven days postirradiation. Anaphylaxis was induced with 4 mg ovalbumin 21--5 days after sensitization. A second group received fractional irradiation of 10 r daily to a total of 200 r, and then was sensitized as in the first group. In addition, passive sensitization experiments were conducted on isolated guinea pig ileum suspended in vitro in Tyrode's solution, and the Schultz-Dale reaction was elicited with ovalbumin. Results showed that guinea pigs which were not irradiated died 3--4 min after challenging injection in acute anaphylactic shock, whereas 50% of the acutely irradiated animals survived, although in a few instances a severe reaction was noted. The fractionally irradiated animals which were sensitized by one antigen injection showed a 60% mortality rate and severe shock symptoms in the survivors. Only 30% of the twice-injected animals in the second group survived and they also showed severe shock symptoms. The passively sensitized (with rabbit anti-ovalbumin) animals received 200-r total irradiation and shock was brought about 48 hr later. It was found that irradiation did not prevent death, nor did it influence the Schultz-Dale reaction in isolated ileum of passively sensitized animals. Irradiation of rabbit immune serum in vitro did not inactivate the specific reactive groups of the antibodies. Studies on irradiated immune serums showed that their ability to precipitate with antigen was not impaired. (BBB)
