EFFECT OF 2-/cap beta/-AMINOETHYLISOTHIOUREA (AET) ON THE LESIONS OF CRYPT NUCLEI OF THE SMALL INTESTINE OF IRRADIATED MICE (in French)

In order to study the effect of AET on the lesions of crypt nuclei of the small intestine, male C/sup +/ mice, aged 3 months, were exposed to x-ray doses of 225, 450, 900, and 1350 r. The mice were sacrificed at various intervals after the irradiation. The results show that some of the cytological lesions occurring after irradiation (fragments and bridges of cellules in amphasis, lowering of the mitotic activity) are, even after 225 r, directly visible in the crypt nuclei of intestinal cells; other modifications (pyknosis and augmentation of nuclear surfaces) appear only after an hour and longer after irradiation. The degree of protection offered by AET to intestinal crypt cells is the same for all x-ray doses used. As the lesions, during the first few hours after irradiation, are less marked in the protected mice than in the unprotected mice, it is suggested that AET acts principally by protecting the nuclei of crypt cells against certain lesions caused by irradiation and not by facilitating selectively regeneration processes, AET seems to protect the nuclei during the complete initotic cycle.
