CONCERNING DIFFERENCES IN THE REPAIR OF RADIATION-INJURED RAT SPLEENS. A HISTOLOGICAL AND CYTOLOGICAL STUDY AT 2 AND 8 DAYS AFTER 600-r WHOLE-BODY IRRADIATION AND 10-DAY PRE-IRRADIATION WITH 3r DAILY (in German)

Three hundred ten inale albino rats (130 to 180 g) received 1 x600 r or 10 x 3 r + 1 x 600 r whole-body irradiation. Life expectancy was the same in both groups. Histological investigation of the spleen on the 2nd and the 8th day after 1 x 600 r or 10 x 3 r + 1 x 600 r showed no signs that the pre-irradiation with x rays for 10 days influenced significantly the radiation sensitivity or recovery ability of the spleen irradiated with 1 x 600 r. there were great differences in the spleen reaction in all groups. About 10% of the pre- irradiated or not pre-irradiated animals showed no histological spleen damage 2 days after 600 r. Cytological investigations of smear preparations were found very valuable in addition to the investigation of slices of the spleen. There was a very active and multiform hematopoiesis in about 3/5 of the rats by the 8th day after 1 x 600 r or 10 x3 r + 1 x600 r. The lymphopoiesis, originating frori the large lymphatic reticulum cells was surpassed by the hematopoiesis of the red splenic pulp, and, in the beginning, by an active erythropoiesis and megakaryopoiesis, as well as by plasmoblasts, lymphoid plasma cells, and new formation of granulocytes. Very significant was the regeneration activity and pluripotency of the young reticulum cells of the spleen. (auth)
