INFLUENCE OF PREIRRADIATION WITH WEAK DOSES ON THE EFFECTS OF A STRONG DOSE OF RADIATION. STUDY OF THE HISTOLOGIC REACTIONS OF SPLEEN AND TESTIS IN THE RAT (in French)

Rats were subjected to 600-r whole-body x irradiation given in a single dose. Some of the animals had been preexposed to low doses (3 r/day for 10 days). The mortality rate was not significantly different between the 2 groups; 50% of the animals in both groups died by the 9th postirradiation day. Histologic study of the spleen 2 days after the 600-r dose revealed that in about half of the pre- exposed rats the marked involution of lymphatic nodules seen in irradiated controls was absent. Thus, several rats showed abundant lynaphocytes and well- developed reticular tissue, whereas in the controls the number of lymphocytes and reticulum cells was markedly diminished. Examination of the spleens 8 days postirradiation also showed in some instances that preirradiation accelerated the recovery of lymphatic tissue; however, such was not the case in all of the animals. There were marked individual differences in the recovery of the spleen in both groups. Histologic reactions in testis showed a parallel to those in spleen, namely, that in some, but not all, preirradiation conferred a degree of radioresistance on germinal cells. Marked individual differences in radiosensitivity and response to preirradiation were noted. (TCO)
