In rabbits under urethane narcosis, ventricular tachycardia was induced by injecting 0.05 ml of a 0.05% aconitine solution in the heant apex, and the animals were irradiated with a dose of 1000 r. By electrocardiogram (ECG) the course of tachycardia was observed with administration of 1% procaine solution therapeutically or preventively in various forms (in muscle, in the region of the cervical vagosympathetic nerve, and in slow irtravenous infusion). All observations were made on the 3rd or 6th day after irradiation. In nonirradiated animals, the urethane narcosis, tracheotomy, thoracotomy, injection of physiological saline into the heart, or infusion of procaine showed no marked effect on the ECG. In irradiated animals, frequent minor rhythm disorders appeared during simple experimental procedures. After procaine (on the 6th day after irradiation), frequent occurrence of supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias and a change in the configuration of BRS were observed. The changes were frequent, especially after the vagosympathetic block with procaine. In nonirradiated animals procaine normalizes 30% of tachycardias when applied subcutaneously after inducing tachycardia, in 33% with infiltration of vagosympathicus, and 16% with intravenous infusion. In preventive application, intravenous infusion is the most effective (75% normalizations). On the 3rd day after irradiation, procaine also has a favorable effect, though diminished in comparison with the nonirradiated animals: in therapeutic administration 33% of tachycardias are normalized with infiltration of vagosympathicus and 16% with intravenous infusion. In preventive intravenous use its efficacy has diminished to 58% normalizations. On the 6th day after irradiation the preventive and therapeutic efficacy of procaine is greatly diminished. If procaine was applied therapeutically after inducing tachycardia, infiltration of vagosympathicus gave only 11% normalization, intravenous infusion 25%. Thus after whole-body irradiation with 1000 r in the rabbit there is a tendency to arrhythmias and disorders in conductivity. The change of the definitely antifibrillatory effect of procaine into a profibrillatory one on the 6th day after 1000 r is surprising, and has not been reported in the literature previously. (BBB)
