Infiltration of the cervical region of vagosympathetic nerves by a 1% procaine soluiion provokes in nonirradiated rabbits a statistically signlficant degree of occurrence of arrhythmia and alteration in the form of QRS complexes of the electrocardiogram; these changes can be prevented by a preliminary administration of atropine. On the sixth day after whole-body irradiation, the appearance of the mentioned changes is statistically significant to a lesser degree, but arrhythmias are more serious and cannot be prevented by ntropine. These facts testify to an altered tone in the autonomic nervous system and a change in myocardial reactivity following irradiation, possibly as a consequence of certain organic changes producing a higher cardiac excitability during radiation sickness.
