IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO VACUUM TAPS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4124775
A vacuum tap employing a soft low-vapor pressure metal, e.g., indium, to make the seal is invented and is comprised of a seating and a closure member, the sealing being an annular trough containing the metal and the closure having a sharp-edged skirt. In operation, a seal is effected by pressing the skirt into the metal. Since the seal tends to deteriorate after making and breaking it a few times, an electric heating element is wound around the outside of the trough to re-form the metal surface by melting. (D.L.C.)
