A high vacuum valve is designed which has a long life and can be used repeatedly. In closing the valve, an electric heater is used to melt indium metal in an annular trough in the valve seat, the valve body is inserted into the liquid indium, and cooling water is passed through the body to solidify the indium and thus make a super airtight seal. The operation can be reversed to open the valve. The valve can be easily adapted for remote control. (D.L.C.)
