Injections of lipopolysaccharides (PLP) isolated from tea leaves apparently stimulated bone marrow function in irradiated rats when given 24 to 96 hr before exposure to 700 r gamma radiation. The effects were even more marked when a polymer of vinylbutyl ether (VB-2) was given after irradiation to protect intestinal mnucosa from radiation injury and to prevent diarrhea induced by whole- body irradiation. Results are reported from extensive bloed studies in irradiated rats given PLP injections both before and after irradiation and with the addition of VB-2 treatment. It was concluded that PLP exerts a protective effect upon radiation effects on hemopoiesis and also stimulates erythropoiesis andd thrombopoiesis and cells of the leukocyte series. (C.H.)
