White rats were given a single, whole-body dose of 700 r from a Co/sup 60/ source. The rats in group I were each given a total of 200 to 400 gamma of a preparation of tea leaves containing phytolipopolysaccharides. The protective agent was administered subcutaneousiy in four injections at 96, 72, 48, and 24 hours before irradiation. The rats of group II were given an additional, oral preparation of vinylbutyl ether polymer (mol. wt. = 6000) 24 hours after irradiation, and daily thereafter for 30 days. The animals in group III served as controls. Erythrocytes, leucocytes, the leucocytic formula, reticulocytes, trombocytes, and the hemoglobin content were determined before irradiation, and on the 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, and 30th day after irradiation. The death rates in groups I and II were 26 and 23% as compared to a death rate of 82% in the controls of group III. The blood picture was much better in the animals of group I and II than in the controls. The controls showed a low of 47% hemoglobin content compared to 95 to 100% of the initial hemoglobin content in groups I and II. The increase in erythrocyte count was more rapid in the animals of group I and II than in the controls. Thus, it is shown that a preparation of lipopolysaccharides from tea leaves possesses a protective action against irradiation. (TTT)
