The oxidation characteristics of ZrBe/sub 13/, Zr/sub 2/Be/sub 13/, NbBe/ sub 1 and Nb/sub 2/Be/sub 17/ were investigated at 550to 1100 deg C. The zirconium beryllides tended to disintegrate and/or oxidize at very rapid rates under wet air at 650 to 900 deg C, while the niobium beryllides exhibited severe oxidation at 900 to 1050 deg C. The zirconium beryllides were susceptible to serious oxidation under wet air, dry air, and wet argon atmospheres, the minor variations in sensitive temperatures and oxidation rates being dependent upon the characteristics and protective qualities of the oxide coatings which were formed. The rapid oxidation rates at intermediate temperatures appeared to be related to the metastability of some of the oxidation products formed. Disintegration andd metallic spalling effects of beryllide materials in the intermediate-temperature range were associated with the stresses generated by the formation of the oxide coatings. The immunity of modified beryllide materials containing aluminum alloy additions to severe oxidation in this temperature range was attributed to the protective qualities and stability of the thin oxide coatings which were obtained.
