FURTHER EVALUATION OF BERYLLIDES

An investigation was made of the microhardness, elastic modulus, and thermal stability of NbBe/sub 12/ and ZrBe/sub 13/ as a function of temperature below 1000 deg C. The following results were found: brittle behavior of MB/sub 12/ and MBe/sub 13/ beryllides is to be expected in view of their limited mechanism for plastic ship; a reduction in impurity level could reduce, but probably never eliminate, the low ductility of beryllides; there is evidence for an abrupt change in elastic modulus for ZrBe/sub 13/ and NbB/sub 12// at or around 600 deg C; abrupt changes in hardness occur in both NbBe.sub 12// and ZrBe/ sub 13/ at about 150 deg C and again in the range 600 to 800 deg C; catastrophic failure may occur in ZrBe/sub 13/ if heated at 700 deg C in air; and catastrophic oxidation may occur in NbBe/sub 13/ if heated at 900 deg C in air. A course for future action on beryllide programs is also suggested. (P.C.H.)
