INTERMEDIATE-TEMPERATURE OXIDATION OF BERYLLIDES. Quarterly Progress Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4687486

The oxidation characteristics of aluminum-containing modified ZrBe/sub 13/, Zr/sub 2/Be/sub 17/, NbBe/sub 12/, and Nb/sub 2/Be/sub 17 / were studied in the temperature range 650 to 1000 deg C. The oxidation resistances of the modified beryllides in the intermediate temperature range (between 700 and 1000 deg C) with one exception were greatly superior to those of the unmodified materials. The breakaway phenomenon was exhibited only in the instance of ZrBe/ sub 13/ at 871 deg C in which specimen preparation was a factor. Modified Zr/sub 2/Be/sub 17/ and Nb/sub 2/Be/sub 17/ tende d to oxidize more severely at 1093 deg C than the corresponding Al-free materials. X-ray analysis of the modified beryllides after oxidation indicated some differences in the products of oxidation as compared to the normal or unmodified beryllide materiais. The principal difference was the appearance of an unknown phase that was detected consistently in almost all of the zirconium beryllide specimens. In all instances BeO was the principal oxide present on the modified beryllides. (P.C.H.)
