A heat exchanger was designed with a cylindrical surface with a plurality outward extending, helically arranged fins and a number of longitudinally disposed flow splitters extending outward from the surface, or a plurality of outward extending longitudinally arranged fins and a number of helically disposed flow splitters extending outward from the surface. The outer portion of each flow splitter is curved to an extent sufficient, in use, to reduce turbulence created in the path of fluid striking one or both faces of the splitter and thereby being diverted. Examples of this heat exchanger being incorporated in the cans of fuel elements of a nuclear reactor are described. (M.C.G.)
