IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO FUEL ELEMENTS FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4115784
The fuel element described includes a plurality of tubular containers housing nuclear fuel located in an enclosing tube or a bore in a reactor core. The containers have their longitudinal axes substantially parallel to one another and to the axis of the enclosing tube. The outer surface of each container has fins helically disposed with respect to the longitudinal axis of the container. Baffles extending in the direction of the longitudinal axes of the containers intersect the fins on the containers to baffle the flow between the fins. The baffles extend between the containers and the wall of the enclosing tube to provide a plurality of separate flow channels through the tube. This arrangement produces vortex motion of the cooling fluid over substantially the whole lengin of the containers. (A.G.W.)
