OXIDATIVE PHOSPHORYLATION AND THE SERUM PROTEIN ELECTROPHORETIC PATTERN OF RATS TREATED WITH HOMOLOGOUS SERA OF IRRADIATED ANIMALS (in Italian)
Changes in oxidative phosphorylation and the morphology of mitochondria in the liver and kidney of rats injected with homologous serum of irradiated animals were studied to see if such serums would cause pathological alterations in the organs. Experiments were conducted in Wistar rats, weighing 126--180 g, fed on a standard diet. The rats were killed by decapitation and the organs (liver and kidney) were immediately dissected, weighed, and transferred to the cold room at 2 deg . Homogenization was carried out in a Potter-Elvehjem apparatus, 10% homogenates being prepared in 0.25 M sucrose. Tissue debris, whole cells, nuclei, and some mitochondria were discarded by centrifugation at 1500 g for 5 min; mitochondria were sedimented at 12000 g for 20 min. It was foand that the homologous serum of irradiated rats administered to normal rats by peritoneal injection caused cellular damage (decrease in the phosphorylation/ oxidation ratio and swelling of mitochondria); on the contrary, it did not induce uncoupling of oxi-dative phosphorylation in vitro. No changes were noted in the protein levels in serum belonging to rats treated with homologous serums of normal and irradiated animals. In the serum of irradiated rats the albumins were decreased and alpha /sub 1-/ and BETA -globulins were increased. (TCO)
