A swimming pool reactor for neutron irradiations was designed so that the core and related members are located at the center of the pool and self- contained testing loops are disposed around the core assembly. The inlet and outlet pipes for the cooling water are so sited as to allow easy manipulation of the loops. These pipes are provided with deflection vanes. The irradiation loops are protected against heating by gamma radiation from the core by lead screens which are relatively transparent to neutrons surrounding the core assembly and provided with cooling water circulation.
