SWIMMING POOL REACTOR FOR STUDYING THE INFLUENCE OF RADIATION ON MATERIALS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4694369
A swimming pool reactor for studying the influence of radiation on materials comprises within the reactor pool a tank for the reactor core. In order to provide for cooling of the core by forced circulation of water independent from the pool water, carriages displacable within the pool are on rails radially disposed around the reactor core, such carriage being adapted to support materials which are irradiated by conveying them into the proximity of the reactor core. Means immersed in the pool are provided for observing by X- rays the irradiated materials, while outside the tank, there are means, for shifting said carriages without breaking the mechanical and electric connections, connecting these carriages to the apparatus outside the pool. The materiais to be irradiated are suitably enclosed within a loop provided with gas cooling, while means are associated to the loop for ensuring by neutron diffusion the isotropy of the neutron flux used for irradiation of said materials.
