CYTOGENETICS OF NEUTRONIC MUTANTS IN NICOTIANA TABACUM
Three commercial varieties of flue-cured tobacco, Chatham, Delcrest, and Hicks, were subjected to irradiation by thermal neutrons at six doses. Germination of the treated seeds was good in the lowest two doses, 1 x 10/sup 12/ and 2.5 x 10/sup 12/ n/cm/sup 2//sec while deterioration started in 5 x 10/sup 12/ , which was considered to be the threshold dose. The other three doses 1 x 10/ sup 13/, 2.5 x 10/sup 13/, and 5 x 10/sup 13/ proved to be lethal. The field population of about 1200 N/sub 1/ plants was screened for pollen fertility. About 22% of the plants showed less than 80% pollen fertility and in two flower mutants there was complete absence of pollen. Chlorophyll mutants in the N/sub 2/ progeny consisted of albinas, which appeared as simple recessives in a monohybrid ratio. Morphological leaf mutants, mostly due to chromosomal abetrations such as single or double or reciprocal translocation and fragmentation were isolated under different leaf types. Some new leaf mutants breeding true were isolated and maintained for field performance. Flower mutants such as male sterile, yellow stigma, and split flower were isolated in the N/sub 1/, N/sub 2/, and N/sub 3/ progenies. (auth) was also followed. (P.C.H.)
