POLYGENIC MUTABILITY INDUCED BY X RAYS IN NICOTIANA TABACUM (in Italian)
Variability of flower characters in R/sub 2/ progeny derived from seeds of tobacco variety Virginia bright strain T.19, treated with different doses of x rays, was studied; observations were made on progenies obtained by controlled selfing. The method of analysis used was the following one: (1) analysis of variance within the treatment groups in order to esteem the contribution to the phenotypic variability, referable to genetic differences between lines and to environment; (2) test of heterogenity of variances; (3) comparison between treatment and control variances; (4) co-variance analysis for few characters. The most significative results are as follows: for two characters (breadth of throat; length of corolla) the variability of the treated lines is significantly higher compared with variability of the control lines; in the treated series a positive correlation is found between both characters, while in the control series the two characters are independent. The observed increase of variability is briefly discussed from the point of view of a possible role of induced increase of recombination frequency and of induced polygenic mutability. (auth)
