SEARCH FOR METHODS OF STIMULATING LEPTOSPIROSIS IMMUNITY IN IRRADIATED ANIMALS

Research devoted to finding a method of intensifying immunity in animals vaccinated with sorbed leptospirosis vaccine two days after irradiation is discussed. Experiments were conducted on rabbits and speckled susliks (Citellus suslicus Guldenstaedt), which were subjected to massive whole-body irradiation. The animals were divided into groups receiving different combinations of irradiation and inoculation, some having their abdominal organs shielded by a circular screen during irradiation. Large doses of heterogenic serum administered before irradiation considerably increased the rabbits' radioresistance, but completely suppressed antibody production in response to vaccination after irradiation. Small doses of serum administered before irradiation did not increase the animals' radioresistance and failed to stimulate antibody production. The percentage of animals surviving irradiation of the abdominal organs, vaccination with the sorbed vaccine, and infection with a reacting dose of the microorganism was much greater among the animals for which screening was used.
