DETERMINATION OF IRON, COPPER, ZINC AND COBALT IN HIGH PURITY CHROMIUM AND THORIUM NITRATE. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF CHROMIUM (II)

A method for the ion exchange separation and spectrophotometric determination of impurities in Cr and Th nitrates is described. The sample is dissolved in hydrochloric acid, and passed through air to convert chromium (II) to chromium (III), then potassium chlorate is added to complete dissolution of the sample in hydrochloric acid. The solution is passed through the anion exchange column for separation of chromium from iron, copper, zinc, and cobalt. Since an insufficient separation of copper from cobalt and copper from iron is obtained, two columns are used for determination of these elements. Copper and zinc are eluted from the one column with 35 ml of 2.5 N hydrochloric acid and 60 ml of 1 N nitric acid, respectively, and determined with neocuproine and dithizone. The cobalt and iron are eluted from the other column with 35 ml of 4 N hydrochloric acid and 40 ml of 0.5 N hydrochloric acid, respectively, and determined with nitroso-R salt and 0-phenanthroline. The method can also be applied to the determination of impurities in thorium nitrate. (P.C.H.)
