Contrary to thermoelectric isotope batteries, the high surface temperatures required for the operation of thermionic cells cannot be obtained by BETA emitters but only by certain alpha emitters, such as Po/sup 210/ or Cm/sup 242/. The reason is that the energy density of these alpha emitters is higher by more than a power of ten. Thermionic isotope batteries are considerably lighter than thermoelectric batteries of equal output. The degree of efficiency of both types of batteries is approximately equal, being in the area of 5%. (auth)
