A general review of radiation toxicology is presented. The units appropriate to the topic are defined and several of the reactions of water, fatty acids, and alcohols under the influence of ionizing radiation are listed. Radioprotective groups-- cysteine, cysteamine, cystamine, glutathione-- are discussed briefly, with a mention of the use of injections of marrow homogenates in exposed individuals. The nature of dangers from the use of nuclear energy is given briefly; some values of background radiation are tabulated. The analysis of radioactive isotopes remaining 25 days after explosion of an atomic bomb is given, and the analysis of radioactive material in autopsy material (various organs) 207 days after the explosion in Japan is tabulated. Acute toxicity and chronic poisoning effects are mentioned, especially of industrial radium poisoning. A relatively complete table of maximal permissible body dose and concentrations of various isotopes in air and water is given, and the use of EDTA, DTPA, and BAETA in decontamination is stated. The Los Alamos and Argonnetype determinations of natural radioactivity of individuals are discussed; decontamination methods for the skin, especially for removal of Pu, fission products, P/sup 32/, and for head hair, the hands, and wounds are stated explicitly, together with methods for increasing excretion of absorbed radioelements. A brief discussion of the explosions in Japan with respect to the effects of the different waves and pathological effects is given. Protection for workers with different isotopes in pharmacological use is listed as well as notes on the disposal of hospital wastes. Six general literature sources are given. (BBB)
