RELATION OF RADIATION DOSE RATE TO INCIDENCE OF NEOPLASMS IN MOUSE HEMATOPOIETIC ORGANS

Investigations were made on the incidence of neoplasms in mice under various conditions of whole-body irradiation, and special attention was given to the problem of how the dose rate affects the blastomogenic action of radiation. Female mice were irradiated with Co gamma rays in a dose of 800 r at a rate of 23 r/min or 87 or 3.7 mr/min. Thus the intensity of irradiation was varied by a factor of more than 6000 (23 r/min-3.7 mr/min). The neoplasms of the hematopoietic systems detected in the animals were represented by leukemia and lymphosarcoma of the thymus. The incidence of lymphosarcomas showed a marked dependence on the dose rate, the medium rate (87 mr/min) being optimal for this type of tumor; with the lower (3.7 mr/min) or higher (23 r/min) dose rate the neoplasms were significantly less frequent. A different pattern was found in the case of leukemia: its incidence increased at first, but was maximal at the medium dose rate (87 mr/min), and showed no further increase with higher dose rates.
