ANALYTICAL METHODS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF IODINE-131 IN VEGETATION, MILK, THYROID GLANDS AND NATURAL WATERS

Radioiodine, tcgether with- added carrier, was separated by extraction as elemental iodine intc carbon tetrachloride and back extracted as iodide into dilute sulfurous acid. The iodide was precipitated as the silver salt, mounted, and the beta -activity was measured. The observed counting rate was corrected from background chemical yield and radioactive decay, and the activity of the original sample was calculated by comparison with a standard I/sup 131/ source. This method was found to be suitable for the determination of I/sup 131/ in area survey samples of vegetation, milk, animal thyroid glands, and water, (auth)
